Clogged Toilet

A clogged toilet is usually a local blockage you can clear yourself. If the plunger is not working or other drains are backing up too, the clog may be further down the line.

What to try first

  1. Stop the overflow: turn the shutoff valve behind the toilet clockwise, or lift the flapper in the tank closed.
  2. Use a flange plunger (the kind with the extra rubber lip), with enough water in the bowl to cover it. Push gently first, then firm strokes.
  3. Try a toilet auger if plunging fails. It is made not to scratch the bowl.

What not to do

  • Do not keep flushing a clogged toilet.
  • Avoid chemical drain cleaners. They rarely clear toilet clogs and are hazardous if you plunge afterward.
  • Do not flush wipes (even “flushable”), paper towels or feminine products.

When it is more than a toilet clog

If the tub or shower gurgles or backs up when you flush, or several drains are slow, the main sewer line may be blocked. See main sewer line backup and drain cleaning. A toilet that clogs often may need repair or replacement. See toilet repair.

Quick Answers: Clogged Toilet

Why is my toilet clogged and the plunger is not working?

The blockage may be deeper in the toilet trap or in the drain line beyond it, or it may be a solid object. A toilet auger reaches further. If other drains are also backing up, the main line is likely involved.
