What is rooter service?

“Rooter” comes from the machines plumbers use to cut roots and clogs out of drain and sewer lines. A rooter machine feeds a flexible steel cable with a cutting head down the line, spinning through hair, grease, paper, scale and tree roots until water flows again. Over the years “rooter service” has come to mean the whole job of clearing drains and sewer lines, and “rooter plumbing” usually means a plumber who specializes in exactly that kind of work. That is what we do every day, and it is in our name.

Rooter service is different from general plumbing because the problem is usually hidden. A clog might be in a two-inch branch line under the kitchen sink, or it might be sixty feet out in the main sewer lateral under the front yard. Good rooter work means finding where the blockage actually is, clearing it completely, and then telling you honestly whether it is likely to come back.

Our rooter plumbing services

  • Drain cleaning for kitchen, bathroom, laundry, tub, shower and floor drains, using the right size cable for each line.
  • Main sewer line rooter service through an accessible cleanout, to clear the line that carries everything from the house to the street or septic tank.
  • Root cutting in clay and cast-iron sewer laterals where tree roots have pushed in through joints and cracks.
  • Hydro jetting when grease, scale or heavy roots coat the inside of the pipe and a cable alone would only punch a hole through the clog.
  • Sewer camera inspection to see the condition of the line, find breaks, bellies and offsets, and confirm the line is clear.
  • Sewer line repair and trenchless sewer lining when the pipe itself is damaged, plus help with sewer backups.
  • 24/7 emergency rooter service for backups and overflows that cannot wait until morning.

Signs you need a rooter service

  • Several drains are slow at the same time
  • A toilet gurgles or the tub fills with water when the washer drains
  • Sewage or dirty water comes up through the lowest drain in the house
  • Sewer odor inside the home or around the yard cleanout
  • Drains that you clear yourself keep clogging again within days or weeks
  • Wet, soggy patches or unusually green grass over the sewer line

If more than one fixture is affected, the main line is the likely problem. Stop running water, avoid flushing, and call (909) 927-3194.

Why Inland Empire drains clog

The Inland Empire has homes from just about every decade, and the age of the house says a lot about what is under it. Many cities here, including Riverside, San Bernardino, Rialto and Ontario, have neighborhoods that go back to the early 1900s, and Upland has districts from the 1890s and early 1900s. Older homes often still have clay or cast-iron sewer laterals. Clay joints let roots in, and cast iron scales and corrodes from the inside, narrowing the pipe until paper and grease catch.

Homes built from the 1940s through the 1960s sometimes have Orangeburg pipe, a tar-soaked wood-fiber sewer pipe that was widely used in those years. Orangeburg softens, flattens and collapses with age, and roots break into it easily. It is important to know that Orangeburg cannot be lined or rehabilitated. When a camera inspection finds it, the pipe has to be dug up and replaced. Rooter service can clear it temporarily, but we will always tell you straight when the line itself is the problem.

Our water is also hard across most of the valley, so mineral scale builds up in drain lines over time, and mature trees in older neighborhoods send roots toward any leaking joint. Newer tract homes with PVC or ABS pipe usually clog from grease, wipes and debris rather than roots, and those clogs often clear quickly with the right equipment.

Rooter, snake or hydro jetting: which one do you need?

A small handheld snake can clear a simple sink or toilet clog. A powered rooter machine with cutting heads is the right tool for main lines and roots. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the full inside of the pipe, which is better for heavy grease in kitchen lines, scale in cast iron, or a line that keeps clogging after it is cabled. We do not jet every line by default. We start with what the situation calls for, and if a camera inspection shows the line needs more, we explain why before doing anything else.

What to expect when you call

When you call (909) 927-3194, we ask what you are seeing, which fixtures are affected, and whether water is coming up anywhere. If sewage is actively backing up, we talk you through what to stop using while we head your way, and we tell you honestly when we can get there. On site, we find the access point, clear the line, and test the flow with you. We go over the price before any work begins, so there are no surprises. If we see signs of a bigger problem, like roots that keep coming back or a damaged pipe, we show you and lay out your options without pressure.

Rooter Service FAQ

What does a rooter service do?

A rooter service clears clogged drain and sewer lines using powered cable machines with cutting heads, and when needed hydro jetting and camera inspection. The goal is a fully open line, not just a small hole through the clog.

Is rooter plumbing the same as drain cleaning?

Mostly, yes. Rooter plumbing is the specialty side of plumbing that focuses on drain and sewer lines. Drain cleaning is one of its main services, along with root cutting, sewer line clearing and jetting.

Do you offer 24 hour rooter service?

Yes. We answer the phone 24/7 for backups and overflows, and we will tell you honestly when we can get to you.

Can roots in my sewer line be fixed for good?

Cutting roots restores flow, but roots usually return if the pipe has open joints or cracks. A camera inspection shows whether a repair or lining would stop them. If the pipe is Orangeburg, lining is not an option and the line has to be dug up and replaced.

Will I know the cost before you start?

Yes. We explain what the job needs and go over the price with you before any work begins.
